In the United Cup final, Zverev ties Germany and Poland after Swiatek wins the first leg
In the United Cup mixed team tournament final, Germany’s Alexander Zverev (26) staged a remarkable comeback, saving two match points against Hubert Hurkacz (26) to win 6-7(3), 7-6(6), 6-4, leveling the tie against Poland at 1-1. Earlier, Iga Swiatek (22) defeated Angelique Kerber (35) 6-3, 6-0.
Hurkacz faced a tough challenge from Zverev in the opening set, and despite winning the tie-break, Zverev fought back, saving two match points in the second set, including a sublime forehand pass. Zverev secured the win in the decider, leading 4-3 with a break, and forcing a mixed doubles decider after an epic three-hour match.
After both players had excellent starts, world number one Swiatek earlier stepped up his preparations for the Australian Open, which begins on Sunday.
After going toe-to-toe with her opponent until 3-3, Kerber, who had not played in the tournament for 18 months due to maternity leave, reduced her level in the opening set, allowing the four-time Grand Slam champion to step up her game.
In the second set, Swiatek seemed unstoppable, winning in just 70 minutes.
