Zverev defeats Nicolas Jarry at the Italian Open to win his sixth Masters title
Alexander Zverev, aged 27, set the stage for the French Open with a commanding performance, clinching his sixth Masters title at the Italian Open showdown on Sunday. Facing first-time finalist Nicolas Jarry, aged 28, Zverev emerged victorious with a 6-4, 7-5 win, marking his second title in Rome since his inaugural triumph in 2017 at the age of 20. This victory also holds special significance as it marks Zverev’s return to form following his ankle injury during the 2022 French Open semifinals.
Reflecting on his achievement, the third seed Zverev expressed the significance of Rome in his career journey, stating, “Obviously winning my first ever (Masters title) here in Rome and winning my first after my injury also in Rome, so Rome is a very special place for me. It is a very, very special week.”
Jarry, the aggressive 21st seed from Chile, showcased remarkable resilience throughout the tournament, defeating formidable opponents like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Tommy Paul en route to the final. However, despite his powerful serve, Jarry struggled to break Zverev’s dominance, with the German winning an impressive 95% of his first-serve points. Despite Jarry’s valiant effort, Zverev’s composure and precision proved too formidable, allowing him to secure victory after facing three match points.
Acknowledging Jarry’s exceptional performance, Zverev praised his opponent’s tennis prowess, stating, “He is playing huge and you can see by the players he has beaten here this week, (he is) playing incredible tennis.” Zverev also offered words of encouragement to Jarry, highlighting the promising future that lies ahead for the Chilean player.
With this triumph in Rome, where he dropped only one set throughout the tournament, Zverev solidifies his position as a formidable contender as he prepares for Roland Garros.
