Tommy Paul Ends Daniil Medvedev’s Rome Open Title Defence
Daniil Medvedev’s bid to defend his Rome Open title came to an abrupt halt in the last-16 stage as he was defeated in straight sets by Tommy Paul, with the American claiming a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the world number four.
Medvedev, seeded second in the tournament, has never successfully defended an ATP Tour crown and struggled to find his form against Paul, who secured his first-ever win against the former US Open champion.
Paul’s impressive victory sets up a quarter-final clash with Hubert Hurkacz, who earlier knocked out Rafael Nadal in a surprising upset.
With several top-ranked players withdrawing or being eliminated early, including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Carlos Alcaraz due to injuries, Medvedev had a favorable chance to make a deep run in the tournament. However, he joins the list of big names exiting the competition before the French Open later this month.
Rome Open has witnessed the absence of the world’s top four ranked men, creating opportunities for other players to shine. Alexander Zverev, the 2017 Rome champion and currently ranked fifth in the world, advances to the quarter-finals after defeating Nuno Borges and sets up a clash with Taylor Fritz.
