Swiatek, Keys Battle Back for Madrid Open Semi-Final Berths
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek (22) and American Madison Keys (29) overcame first-set setbacks to secure their spots in the Madrid Open semi-finals on Tuesday.
Swiatek, the reigning French Open champion, dropped the opening set to Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (27) but stormed back to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. It was the first set Swiatek had lost all tournament, but she responded with dominance in the second set, blanking Maia 6-0. The deciding set followed a similar pattern, with Swiatek breaking early and holding off a brief fightback from Maia to close out the match. This victory extends Swiatek’s winning streak against Maia to three matches.
Meanwhile, Keys produced a stunning comeback against Ons Jabeur (29), the eighth seed. Jabeur dominated the first set, winning it 6-0 in just 24 minutes. However, Keys dug deep and found her rhythm in the second set, forcing a decider at 7-5. The American continued her momentum in the final set, breaking Jabeur twice to secure a surprise victory and her first ever Madrid Open semi-final appearance.
Swiatek and Keys will now face off in a highly anticipated semi-final clash on Thursday. Both players will be looking to build on their impressive comebacks and book their place in the Madrid Open final.
