Novak Djokovic Accepts Geneva Wildcard to Address Worrying Form Slump
World number one Novak Djokovic (36) has accepted a wildcard to compete in the Geneva ATP tournament next week in an effort to reverse his concerning dip in form ahead of his French Open title defense.
Djokovic, who turns 37 on Wednesday, will compete alongside three-time major winner Andy Murray and world number seven Casper Ruud at the Swiss clay court event.
“He will enter in the second round, either on Tuesday or Wednesday,” a tournament spokesman told AFP, indicating that the Serbian star is likely to receive a first-round bye.
Despite holding a men’s record 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic is experiencing an unusually poor season by his standards. He has yet to reach a final in 2024, with his best results being semi-final appearances at the Australian Open and Monte Carlo Masters.
Most recently, Djokovic was eliminated in the third round of the Rome Open by the relatively unknown Alejandro Tabilo of Chile.
During the same tournament, Djokovic sustained an injury when he was accidentally hit on the head by a water bottle while signing autographs. Although he initially laughed off the incident and even attended a training session wearing a cycling helmet, he later reported experiencing nausea and dizzy spells.
Djokovic will aim to secure his 99th tour-level title at the Geneva tournament.
