First Grand Slam match after giving birth. Osaka was defeated in the first round of the Australian Open 2024
The world’s sixth-ranked player, Ons Jabeur, effortlessly defeated Ukrainian Yuliya Starodubtseva in the opening round of the Australian Open.
It took the Tunisian athlete just 1 hour and 8 minutes to secure her place in the next round. Jabeur only conceded 3 games to Starodubtseva in the first set and a mere 1 game in the second set.
For the 23-year-old Ukrainian, this marked her debut Grand Slam match. Currently ranked 150th in the WTA rankings, she qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open through the qualifiers.
In the upcoming round, Jabeur is set to face the winner of the match between 16-year-old Russian Maria Andreeva and American Bernarda Pera.
Notably, last year, Jabeur exited the Australian Open in the second round, facing defeat against Wimbledon champion Markéta Vondroušová. However, Vondrousova experienced an unexpected early exit this year, losing to the 93rd-ranked player, Dayana Yastremska.
