Iga Swiatek Draws Inspiration from Rafael Nadal to Clinch ‘Incredible’ Madrid Open Title
In a dramatic showdown in the Spanish capital on Saturday, top-ranked Iga Swiatek emerged victorious in what she described as “the most intense and crazy final” of her career, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in a grueling three-hour, 11-minute battle to capture the Madrid Open title and avenge her loss in last year’s final.
Swiatek, securing her 20th career title and ninth at the WTA 1000 level, showcased her mental resilience by coming back from a 1-3 deficit in the deciding set and saving three match points. Reflecting on her remarkable victory, Swiatek emphasized the excitement and unpredictability of women’s tennis, debunking any notions of it being dull.
The Polish star, now boasting eight consecutive final wins and leading the tour with 30 victories this season alongside Elena Rybakina, admitted to feeling tense in the initial stages of the match but found inspiration in Rafael Nadal’s ability to elevate his game mentally during crucial moments.
Recalling Nadal’s past matches, particularly his resilience against Daniil Medvedev in the 2022 Australian Open final, Swiatek drew hope from the tennis icon’s example, believing that she too could overcome adversity even after two hours of intense competition.
In a tightly contested final marked by breaks of serve and momentum swings, Swiatek capitalized on critical moments to claim the opening set before Sabalenka fought back to force a deciding third set. The decider saw both players trading blows, with Sabalenka surging ahead briefly before Swiatek clawed her way back, ultimately clinching victory in a nail-biting tiebreak.
Describing the final as “intense” and “crazy,” Swiatek expressed her disbelief and elation at securing the win.
Despite the loss, Sabalenka acknowledged that she has rediscovered her top form, particularly after defending her Australian Open title earlier in the year. She sees the close defeat as a valuable learning experience and remains determined to continue competing at the highest level against her fellow “Big Three” rivals.
Looking ahead, Sabalenka expressed her desire for more finals against Swiatek and is motivated to keep improving and challenging herself against the best in the sport.
