Poland secured a spot in the United Cup final with a comeback victory orchestrated by Iga Swiatek against France’s Caroline Garcia
Iga Swiatek secured Poland’s place in the United Cup final with a comeback victory over Caroline Garcia of France. Despite Garcia winning the first set 6-4, Swiatek, the world No. 1, fought back and dominated the next two sets, both ending 6-1. The final opponent for Poland will be determined from the match between Australia and Germany.
Iga Swiatek defeated Caroline Garcia on Saturday after trailing 0–1, leading Poland to the United Cup final and the Australian Open.
When the world No. 1 met the seasoned French player Garcia, she lost 4-6 in the opening set but came back to win 6-1 and 6-1 in the next two sets.
Swiatek’s 6-4 defeat was his first set loss since October 2023, again against Garcia.
With this victory, she has now won 15 straight games as she maintains her form following a strong conclusion to the previous season.
With Swiatek’s victory, Poland took an insurmountable 2-0 lead over France when Adrian Mannarino was upset 6-3 7-5 by her teammate and men’s No. 9 Hubert Hurkacz.
After that, Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski won the mixed doubles, bringing the score to a 3-0 rout.
Following her victory, Swiatek stated, “Mentally, I needed to make a big adjustment because I was being impatient.”
“My decisions were poor, and I needed to be more composed.”
“I’m quite proud of myself because I returned to the game more focused after the break after the first set.”
She said, “I would say that I felt a little bit off with my rhythm, even though the surface is really similar.”
“I just knew that my brain needs some time to process it.”
In the final, Poland will play the victor of Australia vs Germany. They are the top seeds in the competition and have only lost once when advancing to the championship match.
