Iga Swiatek Dominates Danielle Collins in Indian Wells Second Round

In a commanding performance, world number one Iga Swiatek (22) defeated American Danielle Collins (30) 6-3, 6-0, while Angelique Kerber (36) caused an upset by defeating 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko (26) in the second round at Indian Wells on Friday.

Swiatek, who had a hard-fought battle against Collins at the Australian Open, initially appeared set for another intense encounter as they were on serve with Swiatek leading 4-3 in the first set. However, Swiatek elevated her game, breaking Collins to love for a 5-3 lead and then winning the final nine games to advance in the tournament, which she won in 2022.

Reflecting on her performance, Swiatek noted, “I started to make a few less mistakes, which gave Danielle a chance to make a few more. It’s a small difference but at the end, I was ready to play well in those important moments, on break points and stuff like that. I’m happy I kept my focus and stayed with my game, no matter what Danielle was doing on the other side of the net.”

Collins, who announced her retirement at the end of the season, is expected to make her final appearance at Indian Wells. The American had defeated Swiatek convincingly to reach the Australian Open final in 2022 and achieved a career-high ranking of world number seven.

In another notable match, Kerber secured her biggest win in three years by defeating hard-hitting Latvian Ostapenko 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The German, who returned to the tour in January after 18 months on maternity leave, expressed her motivation for continuing to compete, stating, “For me, the biggest motivation is the love for the sport. I love to compete, being out there today as well, having this crowd, having the emotions, this gives me everything. Now, having my daughter on my side, it’s even more inspiring for me to have her, and there’s something bigger than tennis as well.”
