Azarenka unexpectedly defeated world No. 93, and Svitolina was defeated because to an injury
Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, currently ranked 93rd globally, has continued her impressive run at the 2024 Australian Open. In the round of 16, she secured a notable victory over the 22nd-ranked WTA player, Victoria Azarenka, who competes independently in the tournament.
The first set saw both players dropping three service games each, leading to a tiebreak where Yastremska triumphed with an 8-6 score. In the second set, the Ukrainian dominated, losing only four games against Azarenka.
Yastremska had previously caused an upset by eliminating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova from the Australian Open. This breakthrough marks the 23-year-old Ukrainian’s first appearance in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament.
In another round of 16 match, Elina Svitolina, hampered by a back injury, conceded to the 19-year-old Czech player Linda Noskova, who had earlier eliminated the world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Noskova won three games, forcing Svitolina to withdraw from the match.
The upcoming quarterfinal clash will feature Yastremska against Noskova.
Yesterday, Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the quarterfinals, solidifying their positions as the primary contenders in the tournament.
