Andy Murray expressed disappointment over his “very flat” first-round defeat to Tomas Martin Etcheverry at the Australian Open. The straight-set loss led Murray to contemplate whether this could be his last appearance at the event. Speaking to Eurosport’s Laura Robson, Murray described a “bizarre feeling on the court” and admitted he expected a better performance, acknowledging the reality of being in the latter stage of his career. Murray highlighted the challenge of managing pressure and energy, noting that he didn’t handle the situation well during the match. He emphasized a need to stay calm and acknowledged the unusual atmosphere on the court.

When asked by Robson if he planned to return to the practice court immediately to address the loss, Murray expressed uncertainty. He stated that unlike last year when he felt physically drained and desired a week off, he currently doesn’t feel physically exhausted. However, he finds it unsettling to go home feeling fresh after a tournament. Murray mentioned being entered in a tournament in France the week following the Australian Open and indicated he would discuss his next steps with his team and family in the coming days.

Having played two tour-level matches this year, both resulting in losses, Murray admitted to Robson that he hasn’t experienced much joy in tennis over the last year. Despite believing he can still play good tennis, he acknowledged the challenge of translating that ability to success on the match court, where it matters most.
