Second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz extended his impressive winning streak at the Madrid Open to 14 matches by overcoming a tough challenge from Jan-Lennard Struff. After a grueling encounter on Tuesday, Alcaraz ultimately secured a spot in the quarter-finals.

In a rematch of last year’s final at the Caja Magica, Alcaraz ended Struff’s six-match winning streak with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4) victory, setting up a quarter-final showdown with seventh seed Andrey Rublev.

Despite struggling with a hip issue, top-seeded Jannik Sinner fought past Karen Khachanov 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to reach his fourth Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season.

Alcaraz, who had been sidelined with a forearm injury during the Monte Carlo and Barcelona tournaments, displayed resilience by saving eight out of 10 break points and weathering four match points before ultimately clinching the win after two hours and 52 minutes on court.

“Missing this feeling so much! On to the quarters next,” expressed the former world number one on the camera lens following the intense match.

With a flawless record of 24-0 on Spanish clay since the beginning of the 2022 season, Alcaraz is aiming to make history by becoming the first player to secure three consecutive Madrid titles.

Reflecting on the match, Alcaraz acknowledged the tough battle against Struff, drawing parallels with their encounter from the previous year.

“It was a tough match that reminded me of last year’s final. It was a great fight,” commented Alcaraz after equalling Rafael Nadal’s record winning streak in Madrid.
