In the 2024 World Grand Prix, Judd Trump easily defeats Mark Selby to advance into the semi-finals
Judd Trump took advantage of a mistake-ridden performance from Mark Selby to cruise into the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix. Trump, in excellent form this season, is eyeing his fourth ranking title of the campaign. Despite Selby having opportunities to establish himself in the contest, the world No. 2 delivered an impressive performance, securing a 5-1 victory.
Trump is now just two wins away from adding to his successful campaigns at the English Open, Wuhan Open, and Northern Ireland Open earlier in the season. The first frame saw a miscue from Trump, offering Selby an opening, but Selby managed only a break of 24 before faltering. Trump capitalized with a break of 59, securing the opening frame and setting the tone for his dominant 5-1 win.
Judd Trump’s sharp performance in the opening frame continued into the second, where he demonstrated skill with a challenging long red followed by successfully pocketing the blue using the rest. He managed a break of 48 before a prolonged safety exchange. Mark Selby benefited from a stroke of luck by fluking a snooker escape but missed a simple yellow, allowing Trump to capitalize and double his lead.
The third frame followed a similar pattern, with Trump showcasing his potting abilities and making a break of 38. Selby had chances, but missed reds kept him from capitalizing, and Trump seized the opportunity to move three frames ahead.
In the fourth frame, Trump’s impressive potting was complemented by skilled safety play, creating an opening after forcing an error from Selby. Trump capitalized on this, producing his first century of the week (56th of the season) to lead 4-0 at the interval.
Selby rallied in the fifth frame, responding to the crowd’s support when Trump left a black in the jaws. Selby secured a break of 100, avoiding a whitewash. However, Trump maintained his dominance, capitalizing on an error in the sixth to make 69 and secure his 10th career win over Selby.
In the semi-finals, Judd Trump will face Cao Yupeng, who secured a 5-4 win over Mark Williams. Despite Williams initially leading at 3-0 and 4-2, Cao displayed tremendous resolve, winning the final three frames, including a superb break of 74 in the decider.
