German Masters Snooker: JUDD TRUMP FIGHTS ABOVE MATTHEW STEVENS IN THE THIRD ROUND TO JOIN NEIL ROBERTSON AND ALI CARTER
Judd Trump showcased his skill with an impressive century break, securing a 5-3 victory over Matthew Stevens to advance to the third round of the German Masters. The match was characterized by scrappiness, but the two-time champion managed to emerge with success. Neil Robertson and Ali Carter also had convincing performances, dropping only one frame collectively as they progressed. Robertson secured a 5-0 victory, while the defending champion and top seed, Carter, won 5-1.
Judd Trump earned a spot in the third round of the German Masters after a tough 5-3 win over Matthew Stevens. Although the 2019 World Champion didn’t display peak form for much of the second-round match, a remarkable century break in the seventh frame hinted at a return to his top-level performance. His next challenge will be against his good friend Matthew Selt, who secured a convincing 5-0 victory over Martin O’Donnell, aiming for a place in the last 16.
The Ace in the Pack, a two-time winner in Berlin, seemed poised to dominate the match by securing a 2-0 lead, which included a break of 50 in the second frame. Despite this, Stevens had different plans, managing to level the score at 2-2 by winning a couple of scrappy frames. Trump regained the lead in the fifth frame, although both players struggled to find their top form.
In the sixth frame, the Welshman showed glimpses of his past prowess with a break of 52, which was the highest of the match at that point. Nevertheless, a missed red gave Trump the opportunity to get back into the game. Trump, however, faltered at 38, allowing Stevens to finish the frame and level the score once again.
However, that proved to be the nearest he came to winning, as Trump unexpectedly regained his form. The world No. 2 crafted an impressive 114, marking his third century of the week and bringing him close to victory. He then finished the task at hand with a 66 in the eighth frame, ultimately securing a 5-3 triumph.
Mark Williams, a three-time world champion, had a forgettable day elsewhere as he suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of He Guoqiang. In a challenging match, both players struggled to find a rhythm until the 23-year-old managed to compile a break of 121 in the fourth frame, securing a 3-1 lead. He continued his success with visits of 64 and 102, earning him a spot in the last 32 where he is set to face Sam Cragie.
Ryan Day also achieved an impressive 5-3 victory, overcoming Oliver Brown, while Robert Milkins secured a 5-2 win over Robbie Williams, showcasing three breaks of 50 or more. Xu Si advanced by defeating Andrew Higginson 5-2, and Andrew Pagett joined the next round with a 5-3 win against Chris Wakelin.
Mark Allen advanced despite not performing at his best, securing a 5-2 victory over Louis Heathcote. The Northern Irishman’s highest break was only 54, but he consistently scored at least 50 points in all but one of the night’s seven frames. He will now face Joe O’Connor in the next round.
Joe Perry had a successful night, breezing through his match against Xing Zihao with a 5-1 victory. On the other hand, Ken Doherty’s impressive tournament run came to an end with a 5-3 loss to the young Belgian Julian Leclercq. Jordan Brown secured a 5-2 victory over David Gilbert, but there was concerning news for Marco Fu, who, after being 3-1 down to Alfie Davies, withdrew from the match due to medical reasons.
Neil Robertson showcased excellent form, securing a 5-0 victory over Jimmy Robertson to advance to the third round. The World No. 7, aiming to regain his peak performance ahead of the World Snooker Championship (which he won in 2010), had a below-par season but has now lost only one frame in two matches in Berlin. In this convincing win over his namesake, Neil Robertson demonstrated his prowess with one century break and three half-centuries.
Neil Robertson initiated a perfect start with a break of 87, claiming the opening frame. He extended his lead to 2-0 by winning the second frame 85-25. Subsequent breaks of 78 and an impressive 135 allowed the Australian to further dominate, reaching a 4-0 advantage. Jimmy Robertson had no chance of a comeback, as Neil Robertson sealed the win with another frame-clinching break, this time at 86.
In a separate match, defending champion and top seed Ali Carter secured a 5-1 victory against Peng Yisong. Carter quickly took control with consecutive breaks of 54 and 72, establishing a 2-0 lead.
Peng secured the third frame with a break of 80, but Carter narrowly won a tightly contested fourth frame, re-establishing his two-frame lead. The subsequent frames remained closely fought, but on both occasions, it was Carter who emerged victorious, clinching the fifth by seven points and the decisive sixth by 10 points.
Si Jiahui made an impressive comeback, winning five consecutive frames to defeat Mark Joyce. Although Joyce claimed the first frame with a score of 69-68, Si responded strongly with breaks of 57, 79, 87, and an impressive 140, ultimately sealing a 5-1 victory.
Later in the evening, Mark Allen will face Louis Heathcote, while Barry Hawkins is set to take on Mark Davis.
