Owen Farrell Set for International Comeback with World XV Against France
Former England captain Owen Farrell, aged 32, is poised to make his return to international rugby, representing a World XV against France in Bilbao on June 22nd, as confirmed by match organizers on Friday. Farrell has been absent from the international scene since guiding England to a third-place finish in last year’s World Cup in France.
Following the conclusion of this season, Farrell will bid farewell to Saracens, where he has been since 2008, to embark on a new chapter with French Top 14 outfit Racing 92.
In a statement, the organizers expressed their delight at Farrell’s inclusion, stating, “The World XV continues to attract top-tier talent, and we are thrilled to have England fly-half Owen Farrell join the team.”
The World XV, under the guidance of former All Blacks coach Ian Foster, already features two of Farrell’s former teammates, Mako Vunipola and his brother Billy. Additionally, Fijian speedster Semi Radradra, former French half-backs Maxime Machenaud and Camille Lopez, along with Japanese prop Tevita Tatafu, have also committed to representing the World XV.
Farrell expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The opportunity to play for the World XV is tremendously exciting. It will be my first experience representing an invitation team like this, and I look forward to lining up alongside players I typically face in club or international competition, such as Semi Radradra, Camille Lopez, and Maxime Machenaud, in a less intense setting.”
He added, “I’m confident that the players will aim to entertain and deliver a spectacular showcase for the Basque and French fans. Undoubtedly, the French team will bring their trademark flair to the encounter. It promises to be an incredible week and match in Bilbao.”
The fixture will serve as a warm-up for France, who will be without players engaged in the Top 14 semifinals, ahead of their summer tour of South America, featuring Tests against Argentina and Uruguay.
