China opens the Youth Winter Olympics in Gangwon, South Korea
In Gangwon, South Korea, the fourth edition of the Youth Winter Olympics commenced with 17-year-old ski cross racer Lee Jeong-Min lighting the cauldron. The symbolic moment took place at the Gangneung Oval, the same venue that hosted speed skating during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.
The Opening Ceremony was highlighted by the lighting of the cauldron, with Lee Jeong-Min performing the honors. Simultaneously, a second digital cauldron was lit outside the venue, featuring a virtual LED flame visible to spectators in the surrounding park.
The U.S. flag bearers for the event were speed skater Elizabeth Rhodehamel and skeleton slider Noah Park.
The Youth Winter Games, occurring every four years since their debut in 2012, are specifically designed for athletes aged between 14 and 18. This edition extensively utilizes venues from the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
The medal competition is scheduled to take place from Saturday through February 1. Peacock will broadcast all figure skating competitions and the gold- and bronze-medal games in hockey from January 26 to 31. The complete broadcast schedule can be found here, and every sport will be available for streaming on Olympics.com.
Among the notable athletes who have participated in previous editions of the Youth Winter Games are snowboarder Chloe Kim, freestyle skier Eileen Gu, and hockey player Jack Eichel.
