Olympic champion Red Gerard secures his inaugural X Games Aspen title on his eighth attempt
Olympic snowboard slopestyle gold medalist Red Gerard secured his inaugural X Games championship during his eighth appearance at the Aspen, Colorado, competition.
The 2018 Olympic champion delivered outstanding performances in Sunday’s final, earning the top two scores (96.33 and 97 points) and successfully executing an 1800 in all three runs. Gerard narrowly outpaced Canadian Mark McMorris, a seven-time X Games Aspen event champion, by a single point.
Reflecting on his achievement, the 23-year-old Gerard, hailing from nearby Silverthorne, expressed his joy, stating, “I grew up watching these contests like X Games and Dew Tour and U.S. Open. To have a gold here means everything to me, and to do it with Mark McMorris over there, the best snowboarder in the world, and just to land three runs, man, today was just perfect.”
In 2018, Gerard made history as the youngest American man to claim an individual Winter Olympic title at the age of 17. Although he finished fourth in his gold medal defense in 2022, his recent X Games victory marks a significant accomplishment in his snowboarding career.
On Sunday, American Alex Ferreira clinched his third men’s ski halfpipe title by posting the highest two scores. In his final run, scoring 95.33 points, Ferreira executed four different double corks, including a pair of 1620s.
Ferreira, an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, emerged victorious against a competitive field that included Olympic gold medalists David Wise and Nico Porteous.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ferreira, who finished eighth at the 2023 X Games, remarked, “A lot of people told me after last year to stop skiing, and man am I glad I didn’t listen to them.”
French skier Tess Ledeux secured the ski slopestyle gold, adding to her big air victory from Saturday.
China’s Eileen Gu, who won the halfpipe on Saturday, withdrew from the slope event due to right hip pain stemming from a training crash earlier in the week. At the 2022 Olympics, Gu achieved gold in halfpipe and big air, along with silver in slopestyle.
