Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc emerged as the fastest driver in the second practice session at the Australian Grand Prix, outpacing reigning world champion Max Verstappen, while Carlos Sainz secured an impressive third place despite undergoing surgery just two weeks prior.

Leclerc set the pace with a blistering lap time of one minute 17.277 seconds around the Albert Park circuit, putting him 0.381 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who had won the first two races of the season.

Reflecting on his performance, Leclerc expressed satisfaction with his car’s performance but remained cautious about the competition, anticipating a tighter field in the upcoming sessions.

Verstappen faced challenges early on due to damage to the floor and chassis of his car sustained during the first practice session, causing him to miss crucial track time. Despite the setback, he made significant progress after switching to soft tires, narrowly missing out on topping the timesheets.

Meanwhile, Sainz’s remarkable third-place finish marked a triumphant return after undergoing surgery related to appendicitis. Despite initial concerns about his physical condition, Sainz felt reasonably comfortable and focused on maintaining his form for qualifying and the race.

Other notable performances included Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso in fourth and fifth places respectively, with George Russell close behind. However, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton struggled, finishing 18th and expressing concerns about his car’s performance.

In a session marked by incidents, Williams’ Alex Albon crashed into the wall at turn 8 during the first practice, causing heavy damage to his car and prompting his withdrawal from the second session. Several other mishaps highlighted the challenging nature of the circuit, which saw multiple crashes in the previous year’s race.
