On the last day of the Tyr Pro Series in Knoxville, Tennessee, Kate Douglass shattered a 12-year-old American record in the 200m breaststroke on Saturday night. The highly versatile swimmer, often considered one of the world’s most versatile, posted a time of 2 minutes, 19.30 seconds, surpassing Rebecca Soni’s previous record of 2:19.59 set during her repeat Olympic victory in 2012.

While aiming for an American Record later in the season, Douglass achieved the feat earlier than anticipated. The 22-year-old swimmer significantly improved her personal best by 1.92 seconds, advancing from the 15th position to the fourth spot on the all-time fastest performer list. This accomplishment propelled her past renowned American swimmers Annie Lazor, Lilly King, and Rebecca Soni.

Last April 21, Russian swimmer Yevgeniya Chikunova set a new world record in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:17.55. In July’s world championships, Kate Douglass secured victory in the 200m individual medley, earned silver in the 200m breaststroke, and finished fourth in the 100m freestyle. Douglass is anticipated to compete in five individual events at the upcoming world championships in Doha next month.

On the same day, Katie Ledecky won the 800m freestyle with a time of 8:14.97, adding to her collection of 50-plus fastest times in American history since breaking Janet Evans’ previous record at the 2012 Olympics at the age of 15.

In the 200m individual medley, Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh, a two-time world champion in the 400m individual medley, triumphed over Alex Walsh, the 2022 World champion in the 200m individual medley. McIntosh finished with a time of 2:07.16 compared to Walsh’s 2:07.63. McIntosh’s time was just a hundredth of a second faster than Douglass’ winning time at the last July’s world championships, where McIntosh did not compete in the 200m individual medley due to scheduling conflicts with the 400m freestyle.
