Judd Trump defeats Kyren Wilson to start his Masters title defense
Judd Trump, aged 34, staged a remarkable comeback at the Masters snooker tournament on Tuesday, overcoming a 3-0 deficit against Kyren Wilson, aged 32, to secure a thrilling 6-5 victory. Despite facing an early setback, the defending champion showcased resilience, leveling the score at 3-3 with notable breaks, including a 101.
The match remained intensely contested, with both players exchanging frames. Trump, ranked second in the world, managed to seal the win in a nail-biting decider with a clearance of 65 points. Reflecting on the match, Trump described it as a “strange game,” acknowledging the back-and-forth nature of the contest. He emphasized the pivotal moment when he fought to avoid a 4-0 deficit and highlighted Wilson’s remarkable clearance at 5-4, which leveled the score at 5-5 before Trump’s decisive victory.
At one point, I was so nervous that I couldn’t even chalk my cue. “In the previous break, I was heading home, and he took a chance and was unlucky to leave the gap.
“You would think with my experience you would get over the nerves but coming here, to the World Championship or the UK is a different feeling, you just don’t want to go out in the first round.”
Despite his disappointment in the loss, Kyren Wilson acknowledged that Judd Trump deserved the victory in their Masters snooker tournament clash.
“I should have capitalized more at 3-0,” lamented Wilson. “I am disappointed not to finish it off. I should have. That is how my season has gone. All year it has been exactly the same. I just can’t believe I have left the red through the gap, and it sums up my season – but every credit to Judd.”
Wilson’s candid assessment of his performance highlighted his frustration at missed opportunities. He credited Judd Trump for his well-deserved win.
With this triumph, Trump sets up a quarter-final showdown with Ali Carter. Meanwhile, Neil Robertson is set to face Barry Hawkins in the evening session, and the winner will go on to challenge Ronnie O’Sullivan in the next round.
The Masters action continues on Wednesday, featuring Mark Selby taking on Jack Lisowski and Mark Allen facing John Higgins. The stage is set for more intense snooker battles in the upcoming matches.
