Jonathan Milan Secures Giro Stage Four Victory as Pogacar Holds Lead
In a thrilling finish at the Giro d’Italia, Italy’s Jonathan Milan showcased his sprinting prowess to claim victory in the fourth stage on Tuesday, while Tadej Pogacar maintained his grip on the overall lead.
Milan, riding for Lidl-Trek, surged ahead in the final moments of the race, outpacing Australia’s Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to clinch the stage win. This triumph comes as redemption for Milan, who narrowly missed out on victory in stage three.
Expressing his elation, Milan credited his team’s efforts, stating, “I have so many emotions now. I said from the beginning we came here with one goal for everyone. So today the guys did an amazing job.”
Germany’s Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious claimed the third spot in the sprint finish, marking a podium finish in the 190km stage from Acqui Terme to Andora.
Throughout the stage, an early breakaway attempt by Lilian Calmejane, Stefan de Bod, and Francisco Munoz was reeled in by the peloton as they geared up for the expected sprint finale. Despite Ganna’s late attack, Milan’s teammate Simone Consonni delivered a stellar lead-out, paving the way for Milan’s victory at the finish line.
Milan’s win also catapulted him to the top of the points classification, overtaking Tim Merlier who finished fifth. However, the day was not without setbacks, as Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay of Intermarche-Wanty crashed in wet conditions and was forced to retire from the race.
Meanwhile, race favorite Tadej Pogacar maintained his overall lead, staying 46 seconds ahead of Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers. With Colombia’s Daniel Martinez trailing closely behind in third place, the competition remains fierce as the riders continue their journey through the Giro d’Italia.
