Restrictions on free speech were implemented by the IOC for the Summer Olympics
The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee has given its approval for the “Instructions for Athletes’ Self-Expression for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.” These guidelines permit participating athletes to express their views openly on various matters throughout the Games, with the exceptions being official ceremonies (such as the opening and closing ceremonies and medal presentations), during competitions, and while in the Olympic Village.
In all other instances, athletes’ opinions must adhere to the following criteria:
- Align with the fundamental principles of Olympism.
- Avoid direct or indirect targeting of individuals, countries, organizations, or their dignity.
- Steer clear of any destructive expressions.
- Comply with the rules set forth by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) or the relevant international federation, without violating any prohibitions or restrictions.
Non-compliance with these regulations may lead to disciplinary measures commensurate with the severity of the breach. These restrictions have been implemented to strike a balance between upholding freedom of expression and preserving a respectful and competitive environment throughout the 2024 Paris Olympics.
