Remco Evenepoel has officially announced his eagerly awaited participation in the upcoming Tour de France this summer. The Soudal-QuickStep cyclist is gearing up for a busy 2024, which includes his debut at the Tour de France and his participation in the Olympic Games in Paris. Despite having competed in only four Grand Tour events, Evenepoel made a significant impact by winning the 2022 Vuelta a Espana in an impressive fashion, securing victory in the General Classification by over two minutes ahead of Enric Mas.
Looking ahead, Evenepoel is targeting success in various races, with the Volta a Algarve in Portugal being his first objective next month. He humorously mentioned that his entire season revolves around France, starting with races in Portugal, Paris-Nice, the Ardennes, the Dauphine, the Tour de France, and ultimately the Olympic Games. After this intense schedule, he joked about eagerly anticipating a well-deserved holiday in August.
The 2024 Tour de France will commence in Florence, Italy, on June 29, with the final stage consisting of a time trial from Monaco to Nice on July 21. This marks the first time since 1974 that the race won’t conclude in Paris, a deviation prompted by the scheduling of the Olympics, which begin just five days later.
Evenepoel showcased his excellent form recently by setting a Strava record on the Coll de Rates climb, indicating his readiness for what promises to be a golden summer for the talented Belgian cyclist.
Soudal-QuickStep CEO Patrick Lefevere is optimistic about Remco Evenepoel’s potential contribution, believing the 23-year-old can secure a podium finish in the Tour de France time trial.
Lefevre anticipates Evenepoel’s competitive spirit, expecting him to aim for stage wins and the time trial victory. Emphasizing that Evenepoel has nothing to prove, Lefevere sees the value in being an outsider rather than the favorite, expressing excitement at the prospect of an underdog triumph.
