The European Speed Skating Championships opened in Heerenveen, with Norway stomping to a world-record victory in the men’s team pursuit event.
On Friday night, Sander Eitrem, Peder Kongshaug, and Sverre Lunde Pedersen dazzled the Dutch audience by clocking a time of 3:34.22. They won gold by 6.25 seconds over Italy, adding the European title to their Olympic triumph in grand fashion.
On home ice, the Dutch team of Marcel Bosker, Chris Huizinga, and Bart Hoolwerf won bronze. They were comfortably five seconds ahead of the pursuing Polish and French trios, but less than a second behind the Italian team of Andrea Giovanni, Davide Ghiotto, and Michele Malfatti.
Marrit Fledderus, Femke Kok, and Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong of the Netherlands won the women’s team pursuit title, defeating Andzelika Wojcik, Iga Wojtasik, and Karolina Bosiek of Poland by a margin of 0.70 seconds.
Norway finished third on the podium, 0.77 seconds behind.
