English and Turkish title deciders and a historic heavyweight battle

The Premier League is set for a thrilling climax this weekend, and it’s not the only league title that could be decided. Beyond football, major events are unfolding in golf and boxing. Here’s what our editors are watching this weekend.

PGA Championship – all weekend

The second golf major of the season is in full swing with the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The tournament started on Thursday and will conclude on Sunday.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is the favourite, having won his second Masters last month. He faces tough competition from reigning champion Brooks Koepka, who also won in 2018 and 2019, and world number two Rory McIlroy, who arrives in Louisville in excellent form.

McIlroy, fresh off wins at the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo Championship, hopes to end his 10-year major drought, which began with his victory at Valhalla in 2014. With Tiger Woods also competing and Ludvig Aberg emerging as the sport’s next big star, the tournament promises to be captivating right up to its Sunday night conclusion.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk – 23:59 CET

In 1999, Lennox Lewis became the last undisputed heavyweight champion. Now, 25 years later, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will vie for that honor in a monumental bout in Saudi Arabia.

Initially, Fury was favoured due to his height and weight advantage. However, a lackluster performance against Francis Ngannou has cast doubt on his dominance.

The fight, originally scheduled for February, was postponed due to a cut above Fury’s eye. Now, ‘The Gypsy King’ appears laser-focused and fit, a dangerous combination for any opponent.

Usyk, an undefeated fighter and former undisputed cruiserweight champion, has seamlessly transitioned to heavyweight, defeating two-time champion Anthony Joshua twice. This showdown between two of the best and most skilled fighters promises to be one of the biggest nights in boxing history.

Premier League final round – 17:00 CET

If you’re unaware of the Premier League title race, you’ve been living under a rock! Here’s the scenario: Manchester City will clinch a record-breaking fourth consecutive top-flight title if they beat West Ham on Sunday. If City falter and Arsenal beat Everton, the Gunners will take the title.

All 10 matches of the final round will kick off simultaneously at 17:00 CET. Relegation is almost decided, with Luton needing a win and a massive goal difference swing to overtake Nottingham Forest. The top four spots are secured, leaving only the other European places in contention.

Tottenham are currently fifth, ensuring Europa League qualification, but could lose it to Chelsea if they lose and the Blues win. If Chelsea lose, Newcastle could overtake them for a Conference League spot, but they need a win. Manchester United are mathematically in the race for sixth and seventh but have the worst goal difference among the contenders. Despite these permutations, the title-deciding fixtures will likely be the main attraction on Sunday.

Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce – 18:00 CET

The fierce rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce is usually enough to create excitement, but this time, the Turkish Super Lig title is also on the line.

With two games left, defending champions Galatasaray lead Fenerbahce by six points and are having a historic season. Okan Buruk’s side has 99 points, the highest ever in a league season, and are eyeing the 100-point milestone. They’ve won 17 consecutive games, another record.

Winning a record-extending 24th Super Lig title against their Istanbul rivals would cap off an incredible season for Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce, with 93 points, are also having a strong season but have struggled to keep pace with Galatasaray, dropping four points in their last four games. Their only hope is to win this weekend and pray Galatasaray lose their final match.

The atmosphere will be electric in one of the world’s most thrilling derbies. With stars like Mauro Icardi, Dries Mertens, and Dusan Tadic on display, it’s a match you won’t want to miss.
