EXCLUSIVE: Hockey Icon Mark Streit Reflects on IIHF Worlds & NHL Journey

Before today’s Swiss hockey stars graced the NHL, there was Mark Streit, a beacon of Swiss talent in the world’s top hockey league. The former New York Islanders captain and 2017 Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins recently found himself in Prague, not just for the IIHF World Championship, but also to showcase the latest timepieces from Norqain, a company he co-founded.

In this exclusive conversation with 24hscore, Streit delves into his experiences at the ongoing tournament, reminiscing about his thirteen appearances at the World Championships and his illustrious NHL career.

24hscore: Was it serendipity that led you to Prague during the IIHF World Championship, or was it a planned endeavor to coincide with the event?

Streit: It’s a bit of both. Our company’s CEO, Ben Küffer, proposed hosting a company event at the Koscom store in Prague in May, so I thought it aligned perfectly with the tournament.

24hscore: How did you find Switzerland’s victory over Finland in the group stage?

Streit: While it may not have been a significant match for Finland, the atmosphere in the arena was electric. Prague holds a special place in my heart; having played here in the championships in 2004 and 2015, I can confidently say it’s unparalleled in terms of its charm, passionate fans, and excellent amenities.

24hscore: What made this tournament particularly memorable for you?

Streit: The love for hockey here is palpable. The packed stadiums, the camaraderie among fans, the jubilant celebrations – it’s truly remarkable. And Prague itself is a gem, offering a plethora of activities during downtime.

24hscore: Switzerland boasts a formidable squad this year, led by Roman Josi and Kevin Fiala. How do you assess their performance so far?

Streit: This Swiss team is arguably the strongest we’ve ever had at the World Championship. Having all the NHL players present, except for the injured Timo Meier, is a significant boost. Experience is invaluable in crucial matches, and our seasoned players bring composure and wisdom to the team.

Streit: Roman Josi epitomizes excellence on the ice. His consistency, resilience, and leadership qualities are second to none. I’ve known Roman since 2009, and his dedication to the sport is truly commendable.

24hscore: While Josi leads the charge, Switzerland also has promising young talent like Nico Hischier and Lian Bichsel. What are your thoughts on their potential?

Streit: Hischier and Bichsel are undoubtedly promising, but we need to cultivate more depth in our talent pool. The future of Swiss hockey hinges on nurturing young, skilled players who can compete at the highest level.

24hscore: Reflecting on your NHL journey, how do you feel about your impact on Swiss hockey’s presence in the league?

Streit: When I joined the NHL, Swiss players were a rarity. Breaking into the league was daunting, but I hoped to pave the way for future generations. Today, seeing numerous Swiss players excel in prominent roles is immensely gratifying.

24hscore: Your NHL career was illustrious, culminating in a Stanley Cup win with the Penguins. What stands out as your fondest memory?

Streit: Hoisting the Stanley Cup was surreal – a culmination of years of dedication and sacrifice. But my debut game in the NHL, donning the Montreal Canadiens jersey, remains etched in my memory as a dream come true.

24hscore: Beyond hockey, how has retirement treated you?

Streit: Retirement brought new opportunities and challenges. While I miss the thrill of playing, I’ve found fulfillment in ventures like Norqain and contributing to Swiss hockey’s growth.

24hscore: Looking ahead, who do you predict will dominate the rest of the tournament?

Streit: Sweden appears formidable, but in hockey, anything can happen. Switzerland’s resilience and talent give them a shot at the title. And let’s not discount Canada; their physicality and tenacity make them strong contenders.

Mark Streit’s journey from the rinks of Switzerland to the pinnacle of the NHL exemplifies the indomitable spirit of Swiss hockey. As he continues to inspire future generations, his legacy remains ingrained in the annals of hockey history.
