World number one Scheffler to start US Open alongside McIlroy and Schauffele

Scottie Scheffler (27), currently enjoying an outstanding season, will begin the US Open this week in a star-studded grouping with Rory McIlroy (34) and Xander Schauffele (30) at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. World number one Scheffler, who has won five titles on the PGA Tour this year, including the Masters, is set to start the first round on Thursday at 13:14 ET (18:14 CET) from the first tee at Pinehurst No. 2.

Scheffler’s group will begin their second round on Friday at 7:29 a.m. from the 10th tee.

Scheffler approaches the year’s third major, known as golf’s toughest challenge, after a narrow one-shot victory at the Memorial Tournament.

World number two Schauffele, with six top-10 finishes at the US Open, aims to build on his recent PGA Championship win, while Northern Ireland’s McIlroy, ranked third, seeks to end his decade-long major title drought.

Defending champion Wyndham Clark, who has missed the cut in the first two majors this season, will be two groups behind, playing with Nick Dunlap and reigning British Open champion Brian Harman.

Bryson DeChambeau, one of 13 LIV Golf players in the 156-player field, will start his first round at 1:25 p.m., grouped with Viktor Hovland and Max Homa.

Tiger Woods, who accepted a special exemption to compete in this major, will start his opening round at 7:29 a.m. on the back nine alongside 2022 US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and former runner-up Will Zalatoris.

Phil Mickelson, who will turn 54 on Sunday and needs a win to complete the career Grand Slam of golf’s four majors, will tee off at 7:51 a.m. with Rickie Fowler and Canada’s Adam Hadwin.
