LIV Golf wants to enter the Super Bowl celebration in Las Vegas
LIV Golf is set to make its first appearance in the U.S. during the Super Bowl week, seeking to enhance its American presence. Financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and featuring an unconventional team format, the tour has faced skepticism from American golf fans. However, Bryson DeChambeau is optimistic about the synergy between Las Vegas and LIV Golf.
Promoted as “Golf, but louder,” the Las Vegas Country Club event from February 8-10 promises a vibrant atmosphere with hardcore partying and a nightclub vibe. The Birdie Shack, an open-air area overlooking the eighth tee box, is designated for the most enthusiastic revelers, while the Party Hole cabanas, already sold out for the final round, offer an all-inclusive bar experience akin to a VIP booth in a club.
As Super Bowl week coincides with the tournament, DeChambeau, serving as the captain of the Crushers, believes it presents an ideal opportunity to showcase LIV Golf’s product and the talent on display. Acknowledging the need for greater visibility in the U.S., he anticipates a spectacular response to the event.
DeChambeau’s Crushers, facing off against Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers, pose no threat to the NFL showcase, regardless of which teams reach the championship game on February 11. However, LIV Golf is not the only sports entity looking to leverage the Super Bowl’s momentum.
The UFC is scheduled to host a card on the eve of the Super Bowl, and Formula One’s Alpha Tauri team plans to unveil its 2024 car on the Strip during that week.
While this marks LIV Golf’s inaugural event in Las Vegas, it is likely not a one-time occurrence, as the tour follows the trend of various sports, including the NBA, curling, and pickleball, seeking to tap into the vibrant atmosphere of Sin City.
The LIV Golf calendar for this year comprises 14 stops, with six located in the U.S., emphasizing the significance of the American market. The Las Vegas Country Club, known for hosting the PGA Tour’s first $1 million purse in 1993, will once again be the venue for LIV Golf, awarding a total prize money of $25 million.
Bryson DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open champion, views the expansion of sports in the Las Vegas market positively, citing the city’s history of casinos and gambling. He expresses excitement about LIV Golf’s potential involvement in gambling, envisioning bets on every hole, closest to the pin, and longest drive, creating an ideal environment for the tour.
Having been one of the early supporters of the rebel circuit, DeChambeau anticipates a future collaboration between the PGA Tour, DP Tour, and LIV Golf. He believes an agreement is in the works and could materialize sooner than expected, expressing the fans’ eagerness for the return of unified events and his anticipation for that day.
