David Skinns Takes Commanding Lead with 62 at PGA Canadian Open

In a stunning performance, David Skinns surged into the lead at the US PGA Canadian Open after carding an impressive 62 in the opening round at Hamilton Golf and Country Club near Toronto.

The 42-year-old Englishman, still chasing his maiden PGA Tour title, showcased exceptional skill with six birdies in seven holes, culminating in a spectacular birdie putt from nearly 47 feet on the penultimate hole to secure a one-stroke advantage.

Reflecting on his performance, Skinns attributed his success to solid driving and positioning himself favorably for birdie opportunities. His bogey-free round, particularly in the late afternoon, propelled him to the top of the leaderboard, with Americans Sean O’Hair and Sam Burns hot on his heels with scores of 63.

Skinns, ranked 144th in the world, has had limited success on the PGA Tour, making the cut in just over half of his prior events. However, recent strong showings, including a fourth-place finish at the Cognizant Classic and a seventh-place finish at the Houston Open, have instilled confidence in his ability to compete at the highest level.

Expressing his aspirations for victory, Skinns acknowledged the significance of a potential triumph after years of dedication to the sport. Nevertheless, he remained focused on the task at hand, recognizing the importance of maintaining momentum in subsequent rounds.

Skinns’ remarkable round was complemented by stellar performances from O’Hair and Burns, who both produced exceptional displays despite facing challenges such as fatigue and adverse weather conditions.

O’Hair, in particular, overcame exhaustion and battled through a foggy mindset to produce a bogey-free round, highlighted by a remarkable eagle putt and several long-range birdie conversions.

Meanwhile, Burns capitalized on the rain-softened course to record two eagles, propelling him into contention for the title.

Notable figures such as Rory McIlroy also made their presence felt, with the Northern Irishman posting a solid 66 to remain within striking distance of the leaders.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Skinns as he aims to maintain his momentum and secure a memorable victory at the prestigious Canadian Open.
