Amateur Nick Dunlap reflects on future post PGA Tour breakthrough
Emerging amateur talent Nick Dunlap, aged 20, opted to withdraw from the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines in California this week. He cited the need for time to contemplate his future after achieving a significant milestone with his breakthrough professional victory over the weekend. Dunlap made history on Sunday by becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since 1991, securing the title at the American Express tournament in La Quinta, California.
Following his historic victory, the University of Alabama student expressed uncertainty about whether he would persist in his amateur career or make an immediate transition to the PGA Tour.
In a statement issued on Monday, Dunlap announced his decision to withdraw from this week’s PGA Tour event near San Diego, indicating his intention to take time to contemplate his future.
“After an impactful last 24 hours, I have chosen to withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open,” stated Dunlap on Monday.
He further mentioned his plan to return to Alabama to be with family, friends, and teammates, expressing gratitude to Farmers Insurance and American Express for providing him with such opportunities.
In response to inquiries on Sunday regarding the prospect of transitioning to the professional ranks after his narrow victory at the American Express, Dunlap conveyed uncertainty.
“I’m not sure,” Dunlap remarked. “I need some time to let the magnitude of what just occurred sink in. This decision isn’t solely about me; it has implications for many others. I intend to savor this moment and engage in discussions with various individuals before arriving at a conclusion.”
