RB Leipzig’s Dominant Second-Half Display Sees Off FC Koln in Bundesliga Encounter
RB Leipzig surged to fourth place in the Bundesliga standings following a commanding 5-1 victory over struggling FC Koln, highlighted by Lois Openda’s impressive second-half brace. The result extends FC Koln’s dismal record against the current top-five teams this season, with nine matches without a win (D1, L8).
Seeking redemption after a humiliating 6-0 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, FC Koln started with determination. They came close to scoring early when Faride Alidou headed wide from close range. However, it was Leipzig who broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, with Xavi Simons slotting home a clinical finish after a clever lay-off from Benjamin Sesko.

FC Koln responded swiftly, equalizing just three minutes later through Sargis Adamyan, who scored his first league goal of the season with a close-range finish from Eric Martel’s flick.
Leipzig continued to push for a lead in the first half, but missed chances from Dani Olmo, Benjamin Henrichs, and Sesko kept the scores level at halftime.
The visitors’ persistence paid off in the second half when Openda capitalized on a pass from Simons to score his first goal of the match. Openda doubled his tally four minutes later, heading home a cross from David Raum to score his 23rd goal of the season.
With a two-goal lead, Leipzig continued to dominate, adding a fourth goal through Amadou Haidara’s strike from the edge of the box. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen then sealed the victory with a well-taken effort late in the game.
The win marks Leipzig’s fourth victory in five league matches, consolidating their position in the top four. Meanwhile, FC Koln remains seven points adrift of safety with just eight games remaining, facing a tough battle to avoid relegation.
