Rangnick Declines Bayern Munich Offer, Commits to Austria Managerial Role

In a statement released by the Austrian Football Association (OFB) on Thursday, it was confirmed that Ralf Rangnick has opted not to accept the managerial position at Bayern Munich, making him the third candidate, following Julian Nagelsmann and Xabi Alonso, to decline the opportunity to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

Instead of joining Bayern, Rangnick has chosen to extend his tenure as the Austria national team manager beyond the upcoming European Championships, reaffirming his commitment to the OFB until the 2026 World Cup.

Despite being presented with an offer from Bayern, Rangnick deliberated for several days before arriving at his decision, reportedly seeking significant influence over squad planning.

Expressing his dedication to his current role, Rangnick stated, “I’m fully devoted to my responsibilities as the Austrian team coach. I find immense fulfillment in this role and am steadfast in my determination to propel us forward on our established path.”

He emphasized that his decision should not be perceived as a rejection of Bayern, but rather a testament to his allegiance to his team and their collective objectives. Rangnick reiterated his focus on the impending Euros, pledging to devote all efforts to achieving success in the tournament.

Bayern’s president, Herbert Hainer, had previously indicated positive developments in talks with Rangnick following the Champions League semi-final first-leg draw against Real Madrid. However, with Rangnick’s decision to remain with Austria, Bayern’s search for a new manager continues, with Tuchel set to depart in the summer.

Despite considering various candidates, including the prospect of Nagelsmann’s return, Bayern’s pursuit for Tuchel’s successor remains inconclusive. The reluctance of former Bayern player and Bayer Leverkusen manager Alonso to accept the position further complicates the situation.

The uncertainty surrounding Bayern’s managerial vacancy has led to fan-driven initiatives, such as petitions advocating for Tuchel’s retention, particularly after the club’s commendable performance in the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

As Bayern navigates through the managerial transition, the focus remains on securing a suitable successor to lead the club into the future.
