PSG blow a two-goal lead as strong Brest rallied for a draw

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) let slip a two-goal advantage, settling for a 2-2 draw against Brest in Ligue 1. This result also marked the end of PSG’s streak of 14 consecutive head-to-head victories over Brest.

Both squads have displayed strong performances in the recent weeks. While Brest held their ground, PSG created scoring opportunities. Vitinha missed the target with a wild shot, and Marco Bizot saved a powerful attempt from Kylian Mbappé with his legs.

Having demonstrated their defensive resilience, Brest also ensured they posed a threat on the offensive end. Kenny Lala delivered an exquisite cross, met by Jérémy Le Douaron who, despite rising well, headed wide.

Romain Del Castillo tested Gianluigi Donnarumma with a free-kick after Lucas Hernandez mistimed a challenge on Hugo Magnetti. Eric Roy’s team effectively limited the Ligue 1 leaders until the 38th minute.

Bradley Barcola, who had consistently appeared most likely to create opportunities for the hosts, fulfilled that role by delivering a perfectly weighted pass to Marco Asensio. Asensio capitalized on the chance, scoring in his first league start since September.

Just seven minutes later, Asensio’s attempt was blocked after another collaboration between him and Randal Kolo Muani, who managed to poke the ball home ahead of Bradley Locko.

Despite facing these setbacks, Brest dominated the early stages of the second half, with Pierre Lees-Melou and Hugo Magnetti both testing Gianluigi Donnarumma. Their efforts were rewarded with a stroke of luck as Mahdi Camara’s shot took a deflection off Danilo Pereira and found its way past the goalkeeper.

Les Pirates continued to challenge PSG, who appeared frustrated at times. In the 80th minute, Martin Satriano passed the ball to substitute Mathias Pereira Lage, who skillfully flicked it inside the near post.

Brendan Chardonnet made an excellent block to thwart Mbappé late in the game, and both teams were forced to settle for a draw, bringing an end to PSG’s five-match winning streak and Brest’s six-match winning streak, respectively.

Paris Saint-Germain’s frustrations were exemplified by Barcola, who received two yellow cards in rapid succession for dissent and kicking out at Billal Brahimi. This weekend, their lead over Nice was narrowed to six points.

On the other hand, Brest will be pleased to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games across all competitions and currently trail Nice by three points in the standings.
