Jurgen Klopp praised Liverpool’s resilience as they defended against an energetic Arsenal, securing a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. Enduring a persistent assault from Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Klopp’s side clinched a hard-fought success with goals from Jakub Kiwior’s own goal in the 80th minute and Luis Diaz in stoppage-time.

Despite Wataru Endo and Mohamed Salah being on international duty and Virgil van Dijk being sick, Liverpool showed they have the fortitude to win a championship this year.

“In the end, we came through. I’m really happy we could win this game. Arsenal could have won it without a doubt. We finished it, and it spoke for the boys’ character,” Klopp stated.

“I’m really happy about it. That was a tough draw—possibly the hardest one we could have received.

“Enjoying the game in the first half wasn’t easy. At halftime, we made some small changes.

“We were really in the game in the second half. We scored the goals and fought for 95 minutes.”

As Liverpool, the current Premier League leaders, pursue success in four competitions and prepare for a League Cup semi-final against Fulham, Klopp expressed relief at avoiding a taxing FA Cup replay. Leading the league by two points over Aston Villa and holding a five-point advantage over fourth-placed Arsenal, Liverpool aims for their first title since 2020.

Liverpool’s break is welcomed by Klopp

Liverpool will have a rejuvenating break following their encounter against Fulham until their Premier League trip to Bournemouth on January 21st, as a result of avoiding a rematch with Arsenal.

“We desperately wanted to avoid a draw. Now I don’t have to make any decisions which is good,” Klopp stated.

“Wednesday is the next game and then a few days off. We have to make steps if you want to be where we are. We will have a winter break now.”

Alexander-Arnold, an England defender, continued to propel Liverpool forward in the second half, and Klopp praised his impact.

“What a game he played by the way in all the positions he played. You see his class on the ball,” the German replied.

Arsenal’s once-promising season is currently in limbo as they have only won one of their last six games in all competitions and have lost three straight.

In addition to losing the FA Cup and League Cup, Mikel Arteta’s team is no longer leading the Premier League.

Arteta conceded that after missing numerous opportunities to take the lead, they only had themselves to blame.

“We had a strong performance with plenty of chances. We just need to secure the win, but unfortunately, we lost, and we’re not capitalizing,” he remarked.

“When you outperform the best team in Europe and create that many opportunities, it’s something you rarely see against them.

“However, it falls short. The reality is, it’s not sufficient.”

Arteta emphasized that he won’t panic despite Arsenal’s recent downturn.

“When my team plays with this level of confidence, there’s nothing more I can do. I fully support them,” he stated.

“It is what it is, and we must continue playing in the same manner while being more effective.”
