Julian Nagelsmann’s Plea for Pressure-Free Football Ahead of Euro 2024

As Euro 2024 looms just three months away, Germany’s national team finds itself in a state of preparation that is still far from tournament-ready. However, coach Julian Nagelsmann, at the helm since the departure of Hansi Flick in September, insists that the team is not succumbing to external pressures.

Facing a friendly against France followed by a clash with the Netherlands, Nagelsmann remains optimistic despite a mixed start to his tenure. Reflecting on recent matches, he acknowledges the need for balance on the pitch but expresses confidence in the team’s ability to deliver.

“External pressure is a construct that we must resist,” Nagelsmann emphasized in a press conference. “Sporting success is important, but it should not overshadow the joy of the game itself.”

Germany, four-time World Cup champions, has faced disappointments on the international stage since their 2014 triumph. Early exits in the last two World Cups and a round of 16 elimination in the previous European Championship have left fans eager for redemption.

Yet, Nagelsmann urges perspective, urging his team and supporters alike to embrace the joy of football. As preparations intensify with upcoming friendlies against Ukraine and Greece, Nagelsmann stresses the importance of enjoying the journey.

“While success is our aim, we must not lose sight of the essence of football,” Nagelsmann stated. “It’s a game that should ignite passion and evoke emotions. Winning is our goal, but the process should be enjoyed regardless.”

As the countdown to Euro 2024 continues, Nagelsmann remains focused on cultivating a pressure-free environment, allowing his team to perform at their best while relishing every moment on the field.
