A major upset at the Asian Cup as the top tournament favorite experiences unexpected defeats
Japan, widely regarded by analysts as the top contender to win the Asian Cup, experienced a stunning setback in their second group stage match against Iraq.
During the initial half, the Japanese team allowed two goals, both delivered by Aymen Hussein, a forward playing for the local club Al-Kuwa Al-Jawiya. His first goal came from a well-executed header, and later in the first half, he converted a shot from the left flank.
Despite dominating the second half, Japan could only muster one goal in injury time. Wataru Endo, Liverpool’s central midfielder, managed to find the net with a header.
As a result of this outcome, Iraq secured a spot in the playoffs, accumulating 6 points. Japan currently holds the second position with 3 points, but the group standings may undergo changes as Indonesia and Vietnam, both yet to earn any points, are scheduled to play their match later today.
