AFCON in 2023. Ghana was defeated by Cape Verde in extra time

In the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage, the national teams of Ghana and Cape Verde clashed in Group B.

The visiting team took the lead in the 17th minute when Jamiro Monteiro successfully found the net past Ghana’s goalkeeper, Ofori. Although Ghana managed to score 20 minutes later through Majееd Ashimeru, the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to an offside position.

The Black Stars made a comeback in the second half, with goals from Alexander Djiku and Jordan Ayew, who also provided an assist. However, Cape Verde ultimately secured victory as Garry Rodrigues scored in injury time.

Following the conclusion of the first round in Group B, Cape Verde leads with three points. Egypt and Mozambique, who played to a draw, each earned one point.
