Besiktas Part Ways with Former Portugal Coach Fernando Santos Amid Poor Form

Besiktas have announced the departure of former Portugal coach Fernando Santos, revealing the decision on Saturday.

Santos, who assumed the managerial role at the Super Lig club in January, exits with Besiktas currently occupying the fourth position in the league standings with 48 points. However, they trail league leaders Galatasaray by a considerable margin of 36 points. The club’s recent performances have been disappointing, as they have failed to secure a victory in their last five matches.

Prior to his stint at Besiktas, Santos achieved notable success as the coach of the Portugal national team, notably guiding them to victory in Euro 2016. He served as the head coach of the Portuguese side from 2014 to 2022, overseeing a period of significant accomplishment and growth for the team.

Following his tenure with Portugal, Santos embarked on a new challenge by taking charge of the Poland national team in January 2023. However, his time with Poland was short-lived, as he parted ways with the team just eight months later. The decision came after Poland encountered difficulties in their bid to qualify for Euro 2024, notably suffering a significant setback with a defeat to Albania.
