Sean Dyche puzzled by Everton’s peculiar penalty drought
Everton manager Sean Dyche, aged 52, expressed his bewilderment at his club’s unique situation at the midway point of the Premier League season, having not been awarded a penalty so far. The team shares this distinction with Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Intriguingly, Everton also tops the charts for conceding the most penalties this season, with a total of five.
Addressing reporters ahead of Everton’s match against Aston Villa, Dyche labeled the absence of penalties for his team as “peculiar” and raised concerns about the inconsistency in penalty decisions across the league. He remarked on the prevalence of penalties awarded for minimal contact, a trend he finds alarming in what some describe as the ‘modern game.’

Dyche expressed his hope for a more balanced distribution of penalties in the second half of the season, given the current anomaly in Everton’s penalty record. Notably, Everton, facing financial sustainability issues, had points deducted in November, and they currently sit 17th in the league with 16 points from 20 matches. Their upcoming game is against second-placed Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Sunday.
