The Records Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo Could Break or Extend at Euro 2024
At nearly 40 and no longer a regular fixture in Europe’s top leagues, Cristiano Ronaldo (39) may not dominate headlines as he once did. However, the Portuguese icon remains a formidable presence, capable of breaking or extending numerous records at the European Championship in Germany, following what he describes as one of the best seasons of his career.
Ronaldo holds the record for the most international appearances (206) and leads the charts at the European Championships.
Already the only player to have participated in five Euros, Ronaldo has the chance to make it six this month. Although Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas was included in the squad for five Euros, he did not play in two of those tournaments.
Ronaldo has played at least six more Euro matches than anyone else. Pepe, currently second with 19 international matches, could become Portugal’s second player to surpass the 20-match mark in the tournament.

At 41, Pepe could also become the oldest player to participate in a European Championship match. Along with his former Real Madrid teammates Ronaldo and Luka Modric, Pepe could also break the record for the oldest goal scorer in the tournament’s history.
Ronaldo has won 12 games at the Euros, a record no one else matches.
Players with the most matches at the Euros:
- 25: Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
- 19: Joao Moutinho (Portugal), Pepe (Portugal)
- 18: Leonardo Bonucci (Italy), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany)
- 17: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Giorgio Chiellini (Italy)
The King of Goals
With 14 goals, Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer at the Euros. The next highest has just nine goals.
Among current players, Antoine Griezmann has seven goals, while Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata have six each.
Ronaldo also leads in goals scored during Euro qualification with 41.
In 2021, Ronaldo became the first player to score at least three goals in three consecutive Euros. He is also the only player to have been named Man of the Match six times in the tournament.
Known for his heading ability, Ronaldo is the only player to have scored five headers at the Euros. He also holds the record for the most Euro matches in which he scored at least once or twice (10 and four respectively). Additionally, he has taken the most penalties in regular time (three).
Ronaldo holds the record for most international goals (128), 20 ahead of second-place Ali Daei of Iran. He was the first to score in 10, 11, and 12 consecutive international tournaments and could extend this to 13 this summer.
He has scored against more countries than anyone else (47) and could add Turkey and Georgia to this list during the tournament.
Ronaldo’s longevity is unmatched, holding the record for the longest gap between two Euro goals: 17 years and 15 days.
He needs one more assist to tie Czech Karel Poborsky’s record, having delivered seven decisive passes at the Euros. Ronaldo is also the only player to assist in four different European Championships.
