Chelsea’s Reece James Eyes Return Against Nottingham Forest After Lengthy Layoff
Reece James, the Chelsea defender, may mark his comeback to the field as the Blues face Nottingham Forest away on Saturday, following a five-month absence due to hamstring surgery, as stated by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
James, who has featured in eight league matches this season, last played on December 10 against Everton before undergoing surgery.
Pochettino addressed reporters on Friday, expressing optimism about James’ potential inclusion in the squad. He said, “We need to see today (at training), but maybe he can be available in the squad, yes.” Pochettino emphasized the importance of James’ return, praising his talent and highlighting the significance of finishing the season positively.

The potential return of James could provide a significant boost for Chelsea in their remaining three matches as they strive to secure European competition berths for the next season. Moreover, it raises hopes of his participation in England’s Euro 2024 campaign.
Chelsea currently sit seventh in the standings with 54 points, while Nottingham Forest, fighting relegation, are positioned three points above the drop zone in 17th place with two matches left.
Additionally, midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury on Christmas Eve, has resumed training, while goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is nearing full fitness.
Expressing his satisfaction with the return of injured players, Pochettino stated, “(I’m) Happy. This is the last week of the season, and nearly all the players will be fit and available—it’s a good time.” However, he lamented the fact that a fully fit squad will only be available for the final week, terming it disappointing.
Pochettino emphasized the need to assess and improve the squad’s availability to enhance performance levels, viewing it as a significant challenge for the upcoming season.
Chelsea is scheduled to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday before concluding their season with a home fixture against Bournemouth on May 19.
