One of the oldest players to play in the EFL Cup semifinal is Chelsea’s defense
Chelsea’s Thiago Silva has etched his name in EFL Cup history, becoming the oldest player to start in a semi-final match. According to Opta, the Brazilian surpassed Ryan Giggs’ record, with Giggs having started for Manchester United against Sunderland at the age of 40 years and 39 days, precisely a decade and two days ago.
Silva, who joined Chelsea on August 28, 2020, initially signed a contract until the end of the 2020/21 season, with an option for another year. Making his debut on September 23, 2020, in a League Cup match against Barnsley, the veteran center-back showcased his enduring prowess.
On February 10, 2023, Silva once again committed to Chelsea, extending his contract until the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. His remarkable longevity and contributions on the field continue to solidify his status as a key figure for the club.
