The Cup of Spain. Real Madrid was upset by Atletico in a thrilling game to go to the quarterfinals
In the Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash on Thursday, January 18, Atlético Madrid hosted Real at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. The first half saw both teams in a closely contested battle, but it was the hosts who capitalized on their opportunity just before halftime. Samuel Lino scored for Atlético, giving them the lead. However, their advantage was short-lived as, in injury time, Jan Oblak‘s uncertain clearance attempt resulted in an own goal, levelling the score.
The second half brought more action as Atlético once again took the lead in the 57th minute. Álvaro Morata took advantage of defensive errors from Rudiger and Lunin to smoothly find the back of the net. Real, determined, staged a comeback for the second time, with Joselu equalizing in the 82nd minute, assisted by Bellingham, forcing the match into overtime.
In the 100th minute, Griezmann showcased skill, outsmarting Vinicius and clinically finishing from close range. Despite Atlético scoring for a third time, the goal was disallowed due to an offside decision by the referee. Rodrigo Riquelme ultimately sealed the victory for Atlético with a goal in the 119th minute.
Atlético Madrid successfully avenged their earlier defeat in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal, emerging triumphant with a 4-2 scoreline. The “Mattress Makers” advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey.
