Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta vehemently denied any connection to the vacant head coach position at Barcelona for the upcoming season. Rumors emerged shortly after Xavi’s announcement of his departure from Barcelona at the end of the season following a 5-3 defeat to Villarreal. Reports in Spain suggested Arteta as a potential candidate for the role, but the Gunners’ manager expressed strong displeasure during his pre-match press conference.
When questioned about the validity of the reports, Arteta stated, “No. That’s completely untrue. I’m baffled by the fake news. I don’t know the source of it, and it’s upsetting.
“I found it hard to believe. There’s no credible source behind it. Caution is necessary when reporting such things as it happened yesterday.
“I am committed to my current position, feeling positive about it. I am on a journey with this club, and there’s still a long way to go. I maintain a solid relationship with the board.”
“Contract discussions will naturally occur when the time is appropriate, and we will handle them in the best way possible. I am careful when discussing my personal matters publicly. I believe that such news should not be disclosed in this manner. I have consistently expressed contentment with my current situation and am genuinely happy where I am now.”
Arteta was questioned about the intensity of his reaction to the rumors and whether it was related to the connection he has with the fans. He responded, “The two are interlinked. Firstly, I am cautious about discussing my personal matters publicly, especially when someone makes statements about our personal life. Secondly, I don’t think anyone should receive news like that, especially when I have consistently expressed the opposite sentiment. That’s why I feel upset.”
The Spaniard’s existing contract with the Emirates runs until June 2025, but he emphasizes that the primary focus is on advancing the club to a higher level.
“We all share the ambition to achieve more; there’s a collective desire for progress, and the club is determined to make that extra push. There’s a strong commitment from everyone involved,” he stated.
Arteta views the team as his own, acknowledging the responsibility that comes with managing a club and making decisions to maximize potential. He expresses satisfaction in his role, especially post-Covid, and believes the challenges faced during that period strengthened the team’s bond.
While acknowledging that the club is on the right path, Arteta recognizes there’s still a considerable distance to cover before reaching his envisioned destination for the club. He attributes the resilience shown during tough times to creating a strong connection and belief that the current management is well-equipped to guide the club forward.
Regarding contract talks, Arteta reveals that discussions about a new deal have not yet commenced. When asked about negotiations, he responded, “No, we haven’t. It’s something that will naturally unfold when the time is right, if it is meant to happen.”
