Angel Di Maria Leads Argentina to Victory in Copa America Warm-up Against Ecuador

In a prelude to their Copa America title defence, Argentina secured a 1-0 friendly victory over Ecuador in Chicago on Sunday, with Angel Di Maria (36) finding the net to seal the win. With Lionel Messi starting on the bench, Di Maria assumed the captain’s armband and showcased his scoring prowess, notching his 31st international goal in the 40th minute of the captivating encounter at Soldier Field.

The goal originated from a patient build-up, with Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul orchestrating the play by delivering a precise pass to defender Cristian Romero near the edge of the box.

Romero, displaying exceptional vision, executed a skillful turn before threading a delightful reverse pass to Di Maria, who made a penetrating run into the box and calmly slotted home a precise low finish past Ecuador’s goalkeeper, Hernan Galindez.

Following his impactful contribution, Di Maria made way for Messi in the 56th minute, although the Inter Miami star’s introduction did not alter the scoreline.

Sunday’s fixture marked the first of two friendlies scheduled for Argentina before their Copa America campaign kicks off on June 20 against Canada in Atlanta.

As part of their preparations, the reigning world champions are set to face Guatemala in Landover, Maryland, on Friday, concluding their warm-up matches ahead of the Copa America tournament, which this year includes teams from CONCACAF and is being hosted in the United States.
