West Indies’ Joseph receives hero’s welcome upon returning home following his success at the Gabba
West Indies sensation Shamar Joseph, aged 24, will not be participating in the International League T20 (ILT20) as he is returning to Guyana after playing a pivotal role in the Caribbean team’s historic test win over Australia, the first in 27 years. Joseph’s remarkable seven-wicket performance in the second innings at the Gabba was crucial to the eight-run upset victory, following his forced retirement due to a toe-crushing yorker from Mitchell Starc the previous day.
Despite initially planning to join the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20, Joseph has opted to head back home to Guyana to receive a hero’s welcome and celebrate the joyous occasion with his family, including his kids, fiance, and supporters.
Despite their dominance in tests during the 1990s, the West Indies have faced challenges in maintaining competitiveness in the format, with several top players choosing lucrative T20 leagues over test cricket.
While Shamar Joseph is likely to receive numerous offers for franchise T20 cricket, he pleasantly surprised former West Indies greats on Sunday by expressing his commitment to test cricket.
Reflecting on his performance in the final test, Joseph stated on Tuesday, “I believe I’ve made them proud, and I aim for this legacy to endure and propel West Indies cricket forward for an extended period.”
