Sri Lanka’s new test captain, Dhananjaya De Silva, takes Dimuth Karunaratne’s place
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Thursday that all-rounder Dhananjaya de Silva (32) will assume the role of the test captain, succeeding Dimuth Karunaratne (35). Karunaratne led the Sri Lankan test side for 30 matches over four years, securing 12 wins, enduring 12 losses, and drawing six.
Dhananjaya de Silva, known for his spin-bowling and all-round skills, has featured in 51 test matches. He is set to commence his captaincy journey with a one-off test against Afghanistan next month.
This leadership change follows SLC’s decision to replace Dasun Sanaka as the white-ball captain on Sunday, appointing Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga as the leaders for the one-day and T20 squads, respectively.
Late last year, Sri Lanka placed ninth out of ten teams in the 50-overs World Cup in India. This led SLC to choose Upul Tharanga, a former opener, to lead a new selection committee.
