New Zealand’s Devon Conway Ruled Out of First Test Against Australia
New Zealand’s cricket team received a setback as opening batsman Devon Conway has been sidelined for the first Test against Australia, announced captain Tim Southee on Wednesday. Conway sustained a left thumb injury during a Twenty20 match against Australia in Auckland last Friday, forcing him to miss the upcoming Test opener in Wellington.
In Conway’s absence, the experienced Henry Nicholls has been called up as cover for the two-Test series, with Will Young slated to move up the batting order to partner with Tom Latham as the opening pair, Southee informed reporters. Reflecting on Conway’s injury, Southee stated, “Injuries are part and parcel of cricket and provide an opportunity for others to step up.”
Young’s recent impressive performance, scoring an unbeaten 60 in the second Test against South Africa earlier this month, has bolstered New Zealand’s batting lineup. However, Conway’s availability for the second Test in Christchurch, commencing on March 8th, remains uncertain, pending further assessment of his injury.
Southee indicated that the decision regarding the team composition for the Wellington Test would be influenced by weather conditions and pitch characteristics. Considering the possibility of an all-seam attack, Scott Kuggeleijn, aged 32, could be in contention for his second Test cap.
The New Zealand captain also took a moment to acknowledge the retirement of left-arm pace bowler Neil Wagner, who announced his decision on Tuesday after being omitted from the Test squad against Australia. Southee lauded Wagner’s contributions, both on and off the field, describing him as a “special” individual who will be dearly missed by his teammates. Wagner, renowned for his ability to make things happen, leaves behind a remarkable legacy, having claimed 260 wickets in 64 Test matches.
Meanwhile, Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed that the same eleven players who featured in the drawn Test series against the West Indies in January will be retained for the upcoming match against New Zealand. Notably, Steve Smith is set to continue opening the batting alongside Usman Khawaja.
With New Zealand aiming to secure their first Test victory over the top-ranked Australian team since 2011, the upcoming series holds significant importance for both sides. Australia, having swept New Zealand 3-0 in their last Test encounter four years ago, will be eager to maintain their dominance. However, New Zealand’s lineup, bolstered by emerging talents and seasoned veterans, poses a formidable challenge for the visitors.
