Bulls’ Zach LaVine Injures Right Ankle, Expected to Be Out for a Week

Zach LaVine’s streak of unfortunate luck continues. Just seven games after his return from a 17-game absence due to a foot injury, the Chicago Bulls guard finds himself sidelined once again. The Bulls announced on Friday that LaVine would be out for at least a week due to a right ankle injury sustained during their 116-110 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

The injury occurred in the third quarter of Thursday’s game, prompting LaVine to recognize something was wrong and voluntarily remove himself from play. In a display of frustration, he tossed a towel before heading back to the locker room.

Details regarding the severity of the injury and the exact timeline for LaVine’s return remain unclear. Bulls’ head coach Billy Donovan provided limited information on the matter, unable to specify when LaVine might be back on the court. Additionally, it is uncertain whether the 28-year-old player will join the team for their upcoming three-game road trip starting on Monday.

Chicago has demonstrated its ability to perform well without the experienced 10-year veteran. During his 17-game absence, the Bulls achieved a 10-7 record and successfully reinserted themselves into playoff contention just before the midpoint of the season.

However, LaVine’s injury presents a challenge from a front-office standpoint, especially with the trade deadline approaching in three weeks. There were discussions about LaVine potentially being traded, with reports suggesting he might be interested in joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

Upon his return, LaVine showcased a transformed performance on the court, posting averages of 15.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 5.3 assists. Notably, the latter two represent the highest rebound and assist averages of his career.

With a current record of 21-23, Chicago holds the ninth-best position in the Eastern Conference. If the playoffs began today, the Bulls would be part of the play-in tournament.
