Rajon Rondo was detained in Indiana on misdemeanor drug and firearm allegations

NBA veteran and University of Kentucky basketball icon Rajon Rondo, a two-time champion, was arrested in Indiana on multiple misdemeanor charges, including possession of marijuana and a firearm, as reported by Indiana State Police.

Rondo’s arrest in Jackson County, Indiana, was first reported by WDRB in Louisville, which also conducted an interview with Indiana State Police to gather information. Court records and an Indiana State Police spokesperson confirmed that Rondo, the former University of Kentucky basketball star, was taken into custody on Sunday for unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The arrest occurred after Rondo was pulled over for a traffic violation, and a trooper detected the smell of marijuana, prompting a subsequent search. The findings included a firearm, a minimal amount of marijuana for personal use, and drug paraphernalia. Notably, Rondo was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a court-issued no-contact order against him. All charges are categorized as misdemeanors.

Rondo posted bail on the same night and was released from custody.

Rondo, originally from Louisville, where he also played high school basketball, continued his basketball journey at the University of Kentucky, reaching the Elite Eight in 2005. He then enjoyed a 16-season NBA career, securing two championships (with the 2008 Celtics and the 2020 Lakers). Along the way, he earned four All-Star selections and led the league in assists three times. Rondo, who has been out of the NBA for the last two seasons, returned to the headlines due to a recent incident.

The possession of a firearm by Rondo violated a protective order established as part of a court settlement with a woman from the Louisville area. The woman had previously accused Rondo of threatening her and her children, alleging that he had a gun during a dispute in 2022. Although that particular case was resolved through a settlement, she filed for another protective order last year, which remained in effect at the time of the recent incident.
